Scrying with black obsidian is traced back to the Aztecs. It is believed that the Aztecs used black obsidian mirrors as protection against bad spirits and as a tool of seeing someone’s true nature and soul.

The Aztec god, Tezcatlipoca, or “Smoking Mirror,” is typically depicted wearing a black obsidian mirror around their neck that gave them the ability to see a human’s thoughts and actions.
